MorningStar Mission

Missions News –Jan Coleman

MorningStar Mission Ministries is a non-denominational organization dedicated to relieving the spiritual and physical hunger of the poor. They do this by providing food for the hungry, clothing for the needy, shelter for the homeless and the Gospel of Jesus Christ for all.  As a church we support their efforts throughout the year by collecting needed items.  At this time the items most needed are toiletries such as bar soap, shampoo and deodorant and men’s white socks.  If you would like to continue to support the mission in this manner, please drop off your donation at the MorningStar Shelf in the church Narthex.

A complete list of volunteer dates and details can be found on the Missions bulletin board in the church.

  • Toiletry Collection for MorningStar Mission
    • Bring bottles of shampoo, deodorant and soap, and place them in the collection box located in the Narthex.  Hotel size toiletries are perfect!

Dear Good Shepherd Friends:

As the new year begins, the staff at MorningStar Missions tanks God for the blessings He has bestowed upon us.  Once again, through the generosity of people like you, more than 450 needy families had a generous amount of food on their tables for the Holidays.

Let me take this opportunity to thank you on behalf of those families for your generosity.  the response from the community was tremendous and we are truly grateful that through you, we could distribute hygiene baskets, Bibles, food baskets, turkeys, hams and Christmas presents.

May you have a blessed New Year and know that those that help the poor and hurting are truly doing God's work.

Sincerely,
Jackie Kinney, Volunteer Coordinator

Stars of Hope Project . . . Thank You!

Once again, we thank all those involved in the MorningStar Mission "Stars of Hope" project.

We especially thank Jan Wilson for her Sunday morning gentle reminders to take a star.  We especially thank Martha Skoien for setting up our tree of hope in the Narthex as well as providing gifts for some children.

Missionary Calendars

The 2007-08 Missionary Calendars are now here!

  • Who are the Covenant missionaries and where are they serving?
  • How many countries does the Covenant have missionaries in?
  • How do you pray for a missionary?
  • What does the Covenant World Mission office do?

Get the answers to these questions and more!  More importantly, the prayer calendar guides you through a year of prayer for all of the missionaries.  Be sure to check out the Tim Johnson family (Japan) on page 29 and the Eugenio Restrepo family (Spain) on page 14.  Both have visited at our church in the last two years.  A copy is waiting for you in the church Narthex.

"Missionaides "

 - Carol Johnson

There is a great need for bandages in the Congo.  Quoting from "In Spirit" magazine for women of the covenant church:  Two containers full of bandages are on their way to DR Cong.  Because of the faithful support to the shipping funds, we have sufficient funds to ship them both.  The hospital and clinics were out of bandages and are grateful more are on the way. Thank you to all who participate in this ministry.

Ladies, we cordially invite you to come and help us roll bandages for our mission field in Africa, a worthy cause, and enjoy the fellowship and refreshments too.  We need you!  This is a great way to serve the Lord.

See you at our next meeting on Tuesday, March 11th, at 10 AM.

Are YOU Ready to Merge?? It's closer to becoming a reality!!

Under the guidance of Covenant MERGE Ministries and members of our church staff, the Good Shepherd Missions Committee is considering a multigenerational mission trip to Cartagena, Colombia in July 2008.  You are invited to come along!

MERGE Ministries offers you more than a simple “mission experience” as each person will be trained to have a direct impact on the physical and spiritual needs of the Cartagena community.  Since 1968, the Covenant Church and its missionaries have served the people of Colombia in the areas of pastoral training, leadership development, discipleship, evangelism and holistic development. As part of a team, I had the privilege of leading much of this effort.

After serving as missionaries in Colombia for many years, my wife, Marlys, and I are familiar with the culture, language and current ministry needs in Cartagena.

MERGE Ministries will help us plan the logistics of getting there, train the team, and provide leadership support.  The cost will be approximately $1,200 per person, most of which we pray will be offset with funds raised in the next ten months.

In the meantime, we need to know if you have even the slightest interest in joining Marlys and me on this mission trip.  Please let us know if we should pursue this project by completing the information form below.

My gifts, talents and abilities can be best utilized in the following area(s):

q       Children’s Programming

q       Drama and Worship Leading

q       Music

q       Leading an Adult Bible Study

q       Skilled Construction (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.)

q       Unskilled Construction

q       Medical or Dental Care

q       Financial Support

May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands.  Psalm 90:17

January 2008

Dear Friends at COGS,

I want to take this opportunity to wish each one of you God's very best in this new year of 2008. Thanks for  standing with me in prayer, encouragement and financially. It has been a year when I have seen the hand of the Lord work in " mysterious ways his wonders to perform".  I have seen how the Lord has worked "for good" many  things that seemed impossible, yet His ways are not my ways, but much higher than I could ever imagine!

Thank you for praying with me in a special way concerning my health. I can't remember before, having so many different things happening about the same time. I rejoice in Him because I am almost fully recovered and my big toe, that gave me so much pain during the holidays, is now healing nicely and within a week or so should be completely well. My throat problem is also being resolved. Truly the Lord is good!

Each one of you is very special and I praise the Lord for your faithfulness to the Lord and to me! May God continue to provide your needs even as He supplies mine through you and others.

God bless each one of you!

In Christian love,

Dear Praying Friends:

Dear friends at Church of the Good Shepherd,

Though this brief note is very late, please accept our deep thanks and gratitude for your very generous Christmas gift and lovely card!

Right after New Years, we were able to get away for three days as a family and go to Nagano for a bit of snow play and skiing. Part of your gift to us was used to help cover some of those expenses (travel, equipment rental, ski lift tickets, etc.) We had so much fun and Sky even learned to ski for the first time.

God has been good to us as we begin this New Year. Tomorrow and Thursday our entire mission family is meeting together in Tokyo for a time of sharing and feedback with Kathy Allen, who is one of our covenant counselors who works with "missionary member care" and is presently stationed in Chiang Mai, Thailand. She will be flying in to Japan today and spend these couple days with us. We look forward to this time of "team tune-up" and sharing.

I so enjoyed the chance I had in October to be with you on Sunday morning and to get a sense of your worshipping family.  May God bless your ministries in 2008 as you serve Him together.  Thanks for being a direct part of our ministries too.

With deep gratitude,

Tim and Andrea Johnson, Sam Lilla and Sky
